A Short History

It isn’t possible to pin point exactly how old the cricket club is as it had already been formed prior to the first newspaper being printed in Tatura.

In October of the first year of publication, 1880,  the Tatura newspaper at the time commented on a meeting that was held at Walshes’ Hotel to re-organise the Cricket Club, thus making the club well over 100 years old.

In the early years there was no formal competition between clubs.  Games were organised between individual clubs.  It was not until the early 1900s that an organised competition began which was called the Goulburn Valley Cricket Association.

Tatura’s first premiership came in the 1907/8 season.  At that time the competition was played along the English system of having no Finals and the premier team was the one that finished on top of the ladder.  The Tatura side actually went through the season undefeated.

Tatura won another premiership in the GVCA in 1911/12 before the formation of the Shepparton Cricket Association in the 20s, Tatura won three premierships in the SCA in the 30s.

Following the second World War Tatura played in the SCA until the formation of the Tatura Cricket Association in 1950.  Over the years the Tatura association comprised of teams from Dhurringile, Harston, Ardmona, NW Mooroopna, Arcadia, Toolamba, two sides from Murchison and two from Tatura.  The Tatura sides were initial called the A’s and B’s with the B’s later renamed the Colts.  Both sides were actually the one club however there was a fierce rivalry between the two.

The Tatura sides dominated the competition through to its end in 1965 with the A’s winning 7 premierships and the colts two.  The A’s actually won  six in a row from 1951 through to 1957 with Jack King the captain of all 7 premierships.

Tatura joined The Kyabram District Cricket Association in the 1965/66 season and won its first A grade premiership in 1968/69.  Since then the club has won another six A Grade premierships, 3 A Reserve, 4 B Grade, 1 B Reserve and 8 junior premierships.

The last KDCA senior premiership was A Grade in 1997/98.

The 2006/2007 season saw the Tatura Cricket Club join Cricket Shepparton in all grades after a 40 year association with the Kyabram and District Cricket Association

Tatura won its first Shepparton premiership in 2009/10 with the U17s bringing home the flag and has now won several senior and junior premierships.
