A link to last century

Recently the club was contacted by Ian Herriot, who wished to donate an heirloom that his step mother , who has passed away, had kept for many years. Helen Leighton Heriot [Jenkins] had kep safe a gift that was given to her father in 1913.

Helens fathers name is Frank Jenkins. Records are scarce from the early 1900s, but we believe Frank played for the Tatura Cricket club from approximately 1908 to 1913. We do know that Frank played in the clubs 2nd ever premiership in 1911/12. Frank was an opening bat and averaged 21 in the premiership season and was third highest scorer in the grand final with 38.

Frank also served on the clubs committee during his time with the club. Frank obviously made a big impression on the club members as when he moved from Tatura he was given a gift to mark the occasion. A silver serving dish which was engraved with:

Presented to F. A. Jenkins by members Tatura Cricket Club 18.9.13

Frank volunteered to serve his country in WW1 and was one of the lucky ones to return. On his return he setled in Melbourne and lived and worked in the Mentone area.

We thank Ian for donating the momento to the club. It will join our collection of club memorabilia that dates back to the1880s.
